Devices and Insertion

Devices

These are devices with an internal diameter of <2 mm. A non-kinking device, e.g. Ravussin cannula, is recommended.

In extremis, IV cannulae e.g. 18-14 G, may be used, but kinking is a considerable problem.

Insertion

Insertion is not usually associated with trauma, but great care must be taken to ensure correct position prior to starting ventilation.

Capnography may be unreliable, and aspiration of air through a fluid filled syringe is preferable.
