Devices and Insertion

Devices

Wide bore refers to devices above 4 mm in internal diameter and can include tracheal tubes. These may be needle over cannula, e.g. Quicktrach, or based on Seldinger techniques, e.g. Melker kits.

They may also be cuffed or cuffless. Cuffed devices are strongly recommended, as they allow more effective ventilation to be delivered.

Insertion

Wide bore catheters are more likely than smaller devices to be difficult to insert, but once inserted complications of ventilation are less common.
