Following induction of anaesthesia:

1. Use airway positioning and adjuncts to maintain a clear airway before LMA insertion
2. Ensure adequate depth of anaesthesia (including opioids) before instrumenting the airway
3. Use correct technique for LMA placement
4. Check the quality of the airway (manual ventilation and spontaneous ventilation) prior to allowing surgery to start. Do not accept a partially obstructed airway
