Volatile Agents

Volatile anaesthetic agents depress minute ventilation. They blunt the normal response to hypoxia, as well as altering the CO2 response curve.

Exclude other causes of respiratory depression before considering volatile agents as a cause.

If this is suspected, measure the end tidal volatile concentration to confirm the diagnosis.

Ventilation may need to be supported, in order to correct hypoxia and hypercapnia. This will also help to eliminate any residual volatile agent.
