If at laryngoscopy you can only see epiglottis or base of tongue (Fig 1) there are a number of steps that can be taken:

• Step 1: Check/adjust patient position so that the patient’s head is extended and the neck is flexed (Fig 2)
• Step 2: Consider using a longer laryngoscope blade
• Step 3: Externally manipulate the glottis
• Step 4: Use tracheal tube introducer

If at laryngoscopy you can only see epiglottis or base of tongue (Fig 1) there are a number of steps that can be taken:

• Step 1: Check/adjust patient position
• Step 2: Consider using a longer laryngoscope blade making certain the tip sits firmly in the vallecula (Fig 3)
• Step 3: Externally manipulate the glottis
• Step 4: Use tracheal tube introducer
