At the end of a procedure, the following steps should be taken before a tracheal tube should be removed. They are:

Fig 1 Confirm that neuromuscular function is adequate

Fig 2 Discontinue anaesthetic drugs and administer 100 % oxygen

Fig 3 Suction the airway carefully to remove accumulated secretions and other debris

Fig 4 Ensure that the patient is breathing adequately

Fig 5 Place the patient in a suitable recovery position

Fig 6 Assess the patient’s wakefulness, and ability to maintain and protect an airway
