When the anaesthetic gases are turned off, the patient will start to emerge from anaesthesia. An assessment of the adequacy of breathing should be made at this stage.

The circuit can be changed from IPPV to manual mode when the patient starts to breathe, or when expired breath monitoring measures only minimal concentrations of anaesthetic agents.
