Answer: Provided the IV injection is given slowly the patient usually keeps breathing.
The airway is usually well maintained but some airway manoeuvres and suction may be needed to keep it clear.
Partial airway obstruction is common and easy to miss.
A falling oxygen saturation often indicates airway obstruction and allows correction before a problem arises.
Use a pulse oximeter if one is available. Give oxygen if it is available.
Gag and cough reflexes are maintained but aspiration is still possible.
