The following precautions should be taken in order to obtain an accurate blood pressure reading and minimize inaccuracies while using a non-invasive device:

• An appropriate sized cuff should be selected
• All of the residual air should be squeezed out of the cuff before applying it to the arm
• The cuff should be wrapped snugly around the arm
• The arm should be kept at the same level as the heart
• There should not be any leak in the cuff, tubes or connections
