  • Non-flammable
  • Pleasant non-irritant smell
  • Rapid induction
  • Good hypnotic
  • Cheap
  • Hypotension due to cardiovascular depression
  • Respiratory system depression, oxygen should always be added and ventilation assisted
  • Sensitises the heart to adrenaline
  • Dangerous arrhythmias
  • Poor analgesia

Halothane can be used with other volatile agents.

Halothane induction followed by ether is quicker, more pleasant and physiologically safer.

Never use halothane in an EMO vaporiser though, as it will react with the metal.
