Answer

Question: Why is the pulse oximeter essential in detecting hypoxia?

Answer: The pulse oximeter:

  • Provides an early warning - as soon as the SpO2 changes
  • Has an audible tone
  • Allows the anaesthetist to concentrate on looking after the patient because they can hear the pulse rate and SpO2
  • Has made anaesthesia much safer

But remember: the oximeter only works if it can detect a pulse.

The sound of the pulse oximeter in theatre is a vital safety signal.

Never turn off the pulse sound
