Tension Pneumothorax

A tension pneumothorax may occur when air accumulates in the pleural space under pressure. Air may enter the pleural cavity through the chest wall, mediastinum, lungs or diaphragm, therefore any procedure in the vicinity of these regions runs the risk of causing a pneumothorax. Positive pressure ventilation itself may cause a pneumothorax.

Treatment is needle thoracocentesis followed by intercostal drain insertion.
