The Post-anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) has four essential roles:

1. To continue the recovery and stabilization of the patient following anaesthesia
2. Identify and treat any problems that may arise
3. Ensure adequate analgesia prior to returning to the general ward
4. Give a concise handover with a recovery plan for the ward
