Answer

Question: What commonly used signs can be used in an EWSS?

Answer: All of the following:

  • Respiratory rate
  • Heart rate
  • BP
  • Conscious level: AVPU scale
  • Temperature
  • Urine output: ml per hour

Commonly recorded vital signs are used. Originally, only the first five were used and the sixth (urine output) was added for patients with a urinary catheter (Table 1).

The vital signs are recorded on the EWSS chart. Scores are shown across the top and parameters down the side.

Sign Measure
Respiratory rate Breaths per minute (bpm)
Heart rate Beats per minute (bpm)
Blood pressure mmHg
Conscious level AVPU scale
Temperature Degrees Celcius
Urine output ml per hour
