Further Management of the Unconscious Patient

The pupils should be checked for size and reactivity.

A blood glucose level should be checked urgently. If low, IV dextrose (glucose) must be given urgently.

If unresponsive to voice or GCS <8, nurse the patient on their side and consider protecting the airway with a tracheal intubation.

Further, specific tests may be required to establish the cause of the depressed consciousness.
