Initial assessment of every patient requires a systematic assessment of:

• Airway - airway patency
• Breathing - respiratory distress
• Circulation – cardiovascular problems
• Disability - conscious level

Systems are assessed and treated in order of importance. An obstructed airway is likely to kill a patient more quickly than a cardiac problem. Reassessments should be performed after any intervention or change in condition.
