Location of trolley or special shelf

All staff who use airway equipment should be aware of where these trolleys are kept and familiar with the contents.

Equipment on trolley

Attach an equipment list to each trolley. This will help you find equipment quickly and restock the trolley.

Trolleys should not have small items on them, like caps from intravenous cannulae, as they might obstruct airway equipment.

Trolleys should be checked daily and restocked when anything is used. It helps if one member of staff is responsible for this.

Guidelines for difficult intubation or ventilation

Guidelines should be attached to the trolley:

• Non-obstetric guidelines for failed intubation
  • For a routine (fasted) patient
  • For a patient with a possible full stomach
  • Failed intubation and failed ventilation
• Obstetric failed guideline for failed intubation
