These are airway rescue devices which are inserted in the cricothyroid
membrane. They are for patients who cannot be intubated or ventilated and
who are becoming hypoxic. The equipment you would have readily available
if you had a failed intubation and you could not ventilate your patient
is:
Needle
cricothyroid puncture: a cannula if jet ventilation available, or a
larger bore device like Quicktrach if no jet ventilation available
Surgical
cricothyroidotomy (any age): scalpel (number 20 blade), bougie,
tracheostomy tubes or standard ET tubes (6-7 mm for adults)
Other possible equipment:
Bullard laryngoscope
Trachlight
Aintree intubation catheter
Combitube
Needle cricothyroid puncture
Special cannula attached to high pressure device, e.g. Manujet.
