Types of Sharps Container
There a number of options available for use as sharps containers:
Plastic, purpose-made sharps boxes:
- Bright yellow or red with hazard symbols
- Come in varying sizes
- Can be wall-mounted
- Usually for needle and syringe together
- Can be sealed after use
- Too expensive for many countries

Thick cardboard sharps boxes which have been made water
resistant:
- Made by WHO and UNICEF
- For needle and syringe together (hold up to 150)
- Much cheaper – cost $1.60 - $2 each
- But could be opened if placed in landfill

Plastic disc to place on a drinks can:
- Called "The Anti-virus Cap"
- Is a plastic disc/cap which fits ordinary drinks cans and cannot be
removed once on
- But, needles must be detached from syringe then dropped through
hole in top (capacity 150 - 400 needles)
- Children's fingers can't fit through the hole
- Cheaper option: cost $0.83 each

Re-use a local container:
- Examples include metal containers or liquid detergent bottles
- It should be labelled as hazardous
- It should be able to be closed
- Usually needle only as syringe doesn't fit
- Care needed as may be opened if placed in landfill
