Knowledge of the anatomy of the respiratory system is key to an understanding of respiratory physiology and the mechanics of breathing.
The anaesthetist also requires detailed knowledge of the normal respiratory anatomy relevant to tracheal intubation, to be able to recognize a patient in respiratory distress and for the emergency management of the patient in respiratory difficulty.
This session covers the key anatomical features of the respiratory system. It highlights the anatomical landmarks on a CXR and examines the anatomy relevant to tracheal tube and chest drain insertion.
