Metaraminol is a synthetic direct- and indirect-acting sympathomimetic amine.

Presentation |
A 1 ml glass vial containing 10 mg. Dilution prior to administration is essential. The contents of the vial should be mixed with 19 ml of normal saline in a 20 ml syringe. |

0.5 mg bolus doses should be titrated to effect. |
| Mode of action |
It acts mainly via alpha-adrenoceptors causing an increase in BP via an increase in systemic vascular resistance. It has only minimal effects on beta-adrenoceptors. |
| Effects |
It predominantly increases the systemic vascular resistance and has no effect on cardiac contractility. |
| Use |
As for phenylephrine; severe hypotension associated with a normal or fast heart rate. |
