Potential problems with use
If used exclusively for fluid maintenance, hyperchloremic acidosis may develop, particularly if the patient is in renal failure. No potassium is present, so hypokalemia could develop.

In salt-losing conditions 0.9% NaCl alone is an appropriate maintenance fluid as long as potassium is also included in the maintenance regime.
