Indications
Hypotonic saline is used to replace intracellular fluid loss in severe dehydration because it distributes throughout total body water. It is not suitable for use alone to provide maintenance therapy because it does not contain sufficient sodium to replace daily losses and hyponatremia can occur. It is not suitable for intraoperative fluid replacement in either adults or children.
